About Sir Alex Ferguson:
Alex Ferguson was born in December 1941 in the Govan area of Glasgow and after finishing his education at Govan High School he followed his father into working on the Glasgow shipyards while playing football part-time for amateur side Queen's Park.
Ferguson's playing career would never live up to his early promise and following spells at St. Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United he retired at the age of 32 in 1974.
His first managerial post in June 1974 at East Stirlingshire earnt him a reputation as a disciplinarian and following advice from Jock Stein, Ferguson was offered the post of St. Mirren manager in October 1974 where he went on to build his first successful side before being sacked for alleged financial mismanagement in 1978.
Ferguson replaced Billy McNeill as Aberdeen manager in June 1978 and, despite a slow start including two cup final defeats in two years, began to enforce his managerial ideas on the club culminating in Aberdeen's first league title win since 1955 in 1979-80. Ferguson took Aberdeen on an unprecedented run of trophies which cracked the Glasgow clubs' domination of Scottish football with three Scottish league titles, four Scottish FA Cups and a Scottish League Cup bolstered by a European Cup Winners' Cup victory over Real Madrid in 1983. It wasn't until November 1986 however that Alex Ferguson was finally persuaded to leave Pittodrie for Manchester United.
Having broken up the drinking culture at the club on his arrival Ferguson had spent a lot of money on building a new United side including the likes of Paul Ince and Gary Pallister but with no silverware and up and down league form, Ferguson's time was running out. Repaying the board's patience with an FA Cup win in 1990, Ferguson's United side never looked back and quickly began to build on that success year on year with the addition of mercurial Frenchman Eric Cantona in 1992 helping fire United to their first league title in 26 years and Ferguson to the Manager of the Year award.
Manchester United would go on to dominate the English game for the next fifteen years, winning nine league titles, five FA Cups, two League Cups and the culmination of Ferguson's managerial career, the UEFA Champion's League in 1999. Having planned to retire in 2002 but having seen his side suffer during the previous season, he cancelled his plans and began to build another United dynasty.
Six years later he is still going strong and has no plans to retire just yet.
