About Luiz Felipe Scolari:

Retiring from playing in 1982, he took over a scoach of Brazilian side CSA winning the Campeonato Alagoano in his first season. A nomadic few years followed with two spells at Juventude, two at Brasil de Pelotas, his first term at Gremio and a venture to Saudi Arabia where Scolari coached Al-Shabab. He returned to the Middle East in 1988 to coach Kuwaiti club side Al Qadisiya and, after winning the pretigious Kuwaiti Emir Cup, the Kuwait national side. The first Gulf War interrupted Scolari's time in the Middle East but he returned briefly to club management there before really beginning his managerial ascent at Gremio in 1993.

The football Scolari brought to Gremio might not have been pretty but it was certainly effective with the unfashionable Brazilian side winning six titles in three years, most notably the Copa Libertadores in 1995. A brief interlude in Japan's J-League with Jubilo Iwata led to his appointment as coach at Brazilian giants Palmeiras in 1997 where Scolari really cemented his reputation as one of Brazil's top coaches. Leading Palmeireas to their first Copa Libertadores victory in 1999 helped secure the award of South American Coach of the Year and helped him be appointed national coach of his native Brazil in 2001.

Deep in trouble of not qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, Brazil brought in Scolari to save their reputation and as he managed to turn the qualification campaign around he went one step further at the 2002 World Cup finals, leading Brazil to World Cup glory for record a fifth time by beating Germany 2 - 0 in the final.

Scolari's international reputation as now assured and he took over as national coach of Portugal in 2003 to prepare the country as hosts of Euro 2004. Building on the base of a strong Portuguese generation of young players, intermixed with the world class talent of Luis Figo, Scolari took Portugal to the final of Euro 2004 on the back of ecstatic home support only for the run to end with underdogs Greece grinding out a 1 - 0 final victory to lift the trophy. Scolari again took Portugal close in World Cup 2006 in Germany where they fell at the semi-final stage to eventual runners-up France. His last hurrah with Portugal will be at Euro 2008 seeing as he has agreed a £6m a year contract to take over as manager of English Premier League side Chelsea after the tournament ends.
