About Michael Owen:
Michael Owen is one of England’s most well known and respected footballers. Owen has played football for some of the biggest clubs in Europe including Liverpool FC and Real Madrid. Owen was interested in football from an early age and showed an impressive ability for the game from his youth. As a schoolboy Owen considered joining Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal before deciding to join Liverpool where his creativity and flair led the Merseyside club to sign him professionally just after his seventeenth birthday.
Owen made his debut for Liverpool in May 1997 and was one of Liverpool’s main strikers during the 1997-98 season finishing impressively as the League’s joint top scorer and the PFA Young Player of the Year. Owen’s sparkling form continued into the 1998-99 season as he notched up 20 goals imposing himself as one of the strongest and best finishers in the Premier League. Owen played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s successful 2000-01 season as the club lifted the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup proving themselves on the European stage.
However, following Gerard Houllier’s departure from Liverpool speculation arose that Owen would leave the club and this soon came true as he signed for Real Madrid in August 2004. At Real Madrid Owen initially made little progress unable to push himself onto the first team and find the form that had propelled him to success at Liverpool. However, after Owen succeeded in scoring his first goal for Madrid against Dynamo Kiev in the Champion’s League his confidence returned and he finished his first season in Spain with a respectable total of 13 goals. After Real Madrid signed Robinho and Julio Baptista in the summer of 2005 it looked like Owen’s days at the club were numbered and this was confirmed when he signed for Newcastle United in August 2005.
Owen has suffered horrific injury troubles since signing for Newcastle and has yet to fully establish his presence at the club. However, now returned to full fitness, the Newcastle fans are ever hopeful that he will again find the scoring prowess to catapult the club to League and Cup success.
Owen plays for the English national team and has a highly successful record playing for his country. He has been involved in the England squads that have participated in the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2000, 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup and is widely regarded as one of the fan’s favourites.
