About Jose Mourinho:
Mourinho began his career in Portugal as a fitness trainer, translator to Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting, Porto and Barcelona and a coach in his own right, most notably at Barcelona B.
His promotion to a management position first came in a short lived spell at Benfica where he was promoted from assistant coach to manager in 2000 and lasted only nine league games before a dispute with the newly elected club president. The following year he took over at U.D. Leiria and took them to their highest ever league position of 5th.
His exploits with U.D. Leiria aroused the interest of a deflated FC Porto in 2002 who appointed Mourinho manager after a terrible half season and saw him turn their campaign around, ultimately finishing third. The following season Mourinho promised to make Porto champions and initiated a high intensity, physical training regime and a high pressure style of play based around the skill and work-rate of players such as Deco, Derlei and Costinha. The tactics worked and Porto won the Portuguese league, Cup and UEFA Cup in 2003 lifting his reputation as one of Europe's top young coaches.
He went one better the next season taking his Porto side to a 20th Superliga title and all the way to a UEFA Champion's League final victory over Monaco. Jose Mourinho was now the most wanted coach in European football and it took an offer of over £4m per year to tempt him to become Chelsea manager in 2004. Following an early press conference the English media dubbed him the "Special One" and his natural charisma made him an immediate hit with the English public.
Mourinho's arrogance and talent coupled with Roman Abramovich's money meant that Chelsea were in a formidable position to tempt the world's top players to London and Mourninho quickly spent over £70m on new players. Trophies followed with two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup over the next three years but Mourinho was never far from controversy, be it touchline bans, outspoken media comments or internal bust ups wthin Chelsea with senior figures such as technical director Frank Arnesen.
Relations ultimately got so strained between fan favourite Mourinho and the owner that he left the club in September 2007 to the horror of the Chelsea fanbase and the English press. Mourinho is Chelsea's most successful ever manager.
In summer 2008 Mourinho was appointed as successor to Roberto Mancini as Inter Milan manager after some nine months out of the game.
